The Company

Synergy Group of Companies (SGC) is an integrated organization created to provide clients with all of their commercial construction, interior build-out, and real estate investment and development needs. We accomplish this through seven business units that operate in three core divisions: Commercial Buildings, Innerspaces, and SynVest.

Part of SGC’s Commercial Buildings division, Synergy Projects Ltd. (SPL) is an Alberta-based, full-service construction firm specializing in general construction, design-build, and construction management services. SPL is focused on the commercial construction market, including major and structural construction and tenant improvements, and has been in business for 29 years as the original construction arm within SGC.

The Position

The Operations Manager serves as a strategic leader, driving operational excellence in project execution, safety, quality, financial performance, and team development. This role promotes a culture that reflects the organization’s core values, champions continuous improvement, and ensures the operations team has the necessary resources and support needed to survive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership – Lead and mentor a high-performing team, ensuring accountability, innovation, and alignment with district goals.

  • Project Delivery – Oversee planning, execution, and support for Construction Managers and Estimators to ensure quality and consistency.

  • Growth – Partner with Project Development to align operations with Calgary’s growth and market strategy.

  • Financials – Manage resources, forecasting, and cost controls to drive efficiency and profitability.

  • Engagement – Strengthen client, partner, and subcontractor relationships through collaboration and mentorship.

  • Safety & Improvement – Promote safety, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Reputation – Uphold Synergy’s leadership and integrity in the Calgary market.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years managing complex projects and teams.

  • University degree in construction, engineering, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Professional designations such as P. Eng, CET, PMP, or Gold Seal preferred.

  • Experience in estimating, business development, and remote/logistically challenging projects is an asset.

  • Proven leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivating.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage key relationships, including clients, business partners, government agencies, and subtrades.

  • Able to identify key issues; creatively and strategically overcome internal and external challenges or obstacles.

  • A clear and solid understanding of the issues faced by the organization, including, but not limited to market conditions, project challenges, financial, client and or subtrades issues.

  • Sound understanding of risk management.

  • Knowledge of Human Resources policies, practices, and procedures. Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.

  • High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability.

  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.

  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.

  • Outstanding listening and communication skills are essential.

  • Outstanding leadership and a track record of accountability.

  • Track record of successful projects (time, budget, scope) with satisfied customers.

  • Related professional designation preferred.
